In line with R.A. 6949, which declares March 8 of every year as National Women’s Day, and Proclamation No. 227, s. 1988, which designates March as Women’s Role in History Month, the DOST-Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DOST-ASTI) joined the nation in celebrating the 2025 National Women’s Month.
With the overarching theme, “WE for Gender Equality and Inclusive Society” and the sub-theme, “Babae sa Lahat ng Sektor, Aangat ang Bukas sa Bagong Pilipinas,” this year’s celebration highlighted the crucial role of women across all sectors of society and underscored the country’s commitment to gender equality and women empowerment.
Spearheaded by the Gender and Development Focal Point System (GFPS), DOST-ASTI conducted a series of engaging, educational and empowering activities throughout the month of March:
Kick-off with a GAD Talk on SOGIE
The month-long celebration began with a GAD Talk titled “Understanding SOGIE” facilitated by certified GAD expert and consultant, Dr. Renifer Rebello-Francisco. The session aimed to deepen the employees’ understanding of Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression (SOGIE), a key concept in promoting respect, inclusivity, and equality in the workplace. Participants gained insights into how embracing diverse identities contributes to a more welcoming and supporting organizational culture.
Integrate GAD in Procurement
On 6 March 2025, a Suppliers’ Forum was held for DOST-ASTI suppliers, manufacturers and service providers. The forum provided updates on Republic Act No. 9184 (Government Procurement Reform Act), its Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR), and the upcoming implementation of R.A. No. 12009 and its IRR.
The event also introduced the basics of gender and development in the context of procurement, promoting gender-responsive practices among the Institute’s business and industry partners.
Get Fit with the Zumba Wellness Sessions
To promote physical wellness, the GFPS hosted Zumba sessions on two Fridays of the month. These sessions encouraged employees to stay active and relieve stress while fostering camaraderie and fun in the workplace.
Reflect on Women’s Stories through Film Showing
A two-day film showing featured critically acclaimed films Incendies and The Substance, both of which presented powerful narratives of women navigating complex challenges and rising above adversity. The screenings sparked meaningful reflections and discussions among viewers on themes of resilience, autonomy and diverse experiences of women.
Support Small Businesses at the Bazaar ni Juana
DOST-ASTI hosted a two-day bazaar showcasing goods from DOST-ASTI staff entrepreneurs. Products ranged from homemade food and handcrafted goods to pre-loved items and apparel. A special part of the bazaar was the blind massage service offered on the first day, promoting both wellness and livelihood support for persons with disabilities. The event served as a platform to empower and support small businesses.
Learn Candle-Making through the Livelihood Demo
In partnership with the Quezon City LGU, a hands-on candle-making demonstration was organized to teach DOST-ASTI employees the skills that could be used for creative expression or as a potential source of income. Participants enjoyed learning the basics of the craft and creating their own handmade candles during the session.
Empower Women through Self-Defense Training
DOST-ASTI, in partnership with DOST-PHIVOLCS, organized a self-defense training to wrap up the Women’s Month celebration. Attended by women employees from DOST-ASTI, DOST-PHIVOLCS and DOST-PNRI, the session facilitated by Krav Maga Philippines focused on teaching practical techniques to protect oneself in dangerous situations. The event aimed to empower women with confidence and awareness to handle real-life threatening scenarios.
Through these activities, DOST-ASTI reaffirmed its commitment to creating a more gender-responsive workplace and recognizing women’s indispensable role in building a better nation. The celebration also served as a reminder that empowering women is not just a one-month commitment but a continuous journey toward equality and inclusivity.
