Quezon City, Ph – To further expand the use of Remote Sensing in processing earth observation data and automating the detection of features from SAR satellite images, the researchers of DOST-ASTI's DATOS and Synthetic Aperture Radar and Automatic Identification System for Innovative Terrestrial Monitoring and Maritime Surveillance (SARwAIS) Project conducted an Introduction to Radar Remote Sensing training series on 23-26 May and 6-9 June 2022, respectively.

Attended by the officers and officials of the Philippine Coast Guard, National Coast Watch Center, Maritime Research Information Center, and DA- Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, the training covered the basics of Radar SAR processing with the integration of the space science and technology assets that DOST-ASTI could offer.

With the usual support from the Philippine Space Agency, the training was set to further cultivate what DOST-ASTI has started in the space technology race. The training was also designed to familiarize our partner agencies – especially the security sector – with the use of SAR data to complement their mandate and efforts, especially in maritime domain awareness and resources monitoring.

Focusing on the use of SAR data, our attendees were apprised of how our available satellite resources (NovaSAR, Sentinel-1, and ICEYE) could potentially aid in their monitoring and assets deployment efforts. The four-day training was packed with lectures and hands-on activities which further equipped them of remote sensing and GIS skills, in turn augmenting their geospatial knowledge.

At the end of the training course, representatives from each agency presented their outputs and findings, thoroughly deliberating on how to implement such knowledge in their respective offices in return. The participants also toured around the DOST-ASTI premises to check our infrastructures like the ground receiving station and the data center.

PARTNER WITH US!

Housed under the Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DOST-ASTI), the SARwAIS Project focuses on terrestrial monitoring and maritime surveillance of high-priority areas through simultaneous radar image and automatic identification system (AIS) data acquisition through the NovaSAR-1 satellite developed by a UK-based company Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL).

DOST-ASTI serves as the hub for the SARwAIS project activities in the country.
