Preparing for a Quantum-Enabled Economy: DOST-ASTI, OneQuantum PH wrap up BulSU Quantum Leap Lecture Series
Quezon City, PH — DOST - Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DOST-ASTI) recently hosted the culminating activity of the BulSU Quantum Leap: Introduction to Quantum Computing for STEM Educators lecture series, a collaborative initiative in partnership with OneQuantum Philippines and Bulacan State University (BulSU), held on 29 April 2024, at the DOST-ASTI Training Room.
In his keynote presentation titled "Preparing for a Quantum-Enabled Economy," Dr. Franz A. de Leon, Director of DOST-ASTI, emphasized the Philippines' strategic initiatives to harness quantum technology for economic growth and national development. He highlighted the transformative potential of quantum computing in fields such as drug discovery and materials science, and called for investments in modern science and technology infrastructure, a quantum-literate workforce, and strong public-private partnerships

By strategically investing today in quantum infrastructure, research and development, comprehensive talent development, and catalyzing vibrant cross-sector collaboration, our country can secure a decisive competitive advantage in the quantum-enabled economies of tomorrow," Dr. de Leon said.
Mr. Jeffrey A. Aborot, Supervising Science Research Specialist and Project Leader of the Quantum Computing Simulation (QCS) Project, shared insights on DOST-ASTI's quantum computing initiatives. He emphasized DOST-ASTI's commitment to providing computational resources and support for quantum research, encouraging institutions like Bulacan State University to engage in joint proposals and leverage DOST-ASTI's existing High-Performance Computing infrastructure. Mr. Aborot also underscored the potential of quantum computing to address complex problems across various domains, reinforcing the significance of sustained collaboration and innovation.

Dr. Keno Piad, Vice President for Research, Extension, and Innovation at Bulacan State University, also addressed the attendees, highlighting BulSU's advancements in quantum computing. He announced the allocation of new servers to support ongoing research and training and called for collaboration within the BulSU community to lead in this emerging field. Dr. Piad underscored the strategic importance of quantum computing for future competitiveness, positioning the university as a key player in driving technological innovation in the Philippines.

This event capped off a comprehensive 12-Saturday lecture series organized by OneQuantum Philippines, spearheaded by their President, Mr. Bobby Corpus Jr. The lecture series is designed to equip STEM educators with foundational knowledge and practical quantum computing applications. The program included lectures on essential mathematics, complexity theory, standard quantum algorithms, and quantum machine learning, culminating in a panel presentation where participants proposed projects leveraging quantum computing.
DOST-ASTI is committed to leading the charge in preparing the Philippines for the quantum-enabled future. Through strategic initiatives like the Quantum Innovation Laboratory and the QCS Project, DOST-ASTI is dedicated to advancing quantum research, fostering talent development, and driving multi-stakeholder collaboration to position the country at the forefront of this transformative technology.
