BGC, Taguig City – Exactly a year after the first Data Brew, the Remote Sensing and Data Science: DATOS Help Desk (DATOS Project) organized the third installation of the Data Science Kapihan, this time in collaboration with Wave Computing Manila.
The Data Brew 3 was held at the Ignition Venture Studios, Marajo Towers, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig last 28 August 2019. It was attended by participants from various sectors like retail, finance, government, academe, among others. The event was also broadcasted live, and viewing parties were held at different PhilDev TechHubs including Batangas State University, Saint Louis University (Baguio City), and UP Diliman.
Mr. Rufino Olay III, Vice President and General Manager of AI Center for Excellence opened the program by welcoming guests and speakers. He talked about their technologies at Wave Computing like their visual analytics for security, AI applications, and chip/system designs. He also shared Wave's management approaches which include a cohort-based training, a three-month program where he shares his vision with his team while building teamwork and trust along the way.
Dr. Joel Joseph Marciano, DOST-ASTI's Acting Director delivered his message by introducing DOST-Advanced and Science and Technology Institute to the participants. He delved deeper into explaining the existing science infrastructures of the Institution that aid in motivating science research within the academe, government, and scientific communities.
This iteration’s round of panel was divided into three (3) categories:
- Earth Observation Data Application / Smart Cities
- Finance
- Retail
TechTalk 1: Earth Observation Data Application / Smart Cities
Speaker1 : Roel M. De La Cruz was the moderator of this panel. He talked about the DATOS Project’s initiatives and services, including the cloud-free satellite images of the whole Philippines.
Speaker 2: Dr. Nestor Michael C. Tiglao is the Project Leader of the DOST-funded project titled Design and Development of the UP Bike Share System. He shared his vision of bike-sharing cities.
Speaker 3: Engr. Kenneth Quisado is part of Project DIME, an initiative under DBM in partnership with DOST. He presented how DBM-DIME and DOST-ASTI work together to monitor various government-funded projects using remote sensing technologies.
Speaker 4: Mr. Christian Edmund Chua iscurrently the Senior Director in the Financial Services Organization (FSO) of SyCip Gorres Velayo & Co., (SGV&Co.) He actively discussed their research and innovation efforts that make use of blockchain application, Finance Technology, and of how satellite imageries and its technologies can be used in planning for Smart Cities.
TechTalk 2: Finance
The panel speakers talked about their approach on personalized services and data privacy concerns. They also encouraged the audience and users to be trusting in data science and AI on finance.
Speaker 1: Mr. Joaquin Abola from the Business Transformation Office discussed about the Bank of the Philippine Islands’ (BPI) Data Analytics.
Speaker 2: Mr. Johnny Escaler, CEO of Trusting Social talked about Data Science in credit scoring. He shared that Trusting Social’s scoring is based on telco data.
Speaker 3: Mr. Nichel Gaba, CEO & Founder of the Philippine Digital Asset Exchange (PDAX) presented how his company applies blockchain technology to financial markets.
Speaker 4: Mr. Troy James Palanca, Head of Data at First Circle is shared his insights on data availability and applicability of AI/ML Techniques, and impacting decisions at First Circle. Mr. Palanca leads a team that works full-stack across data engineering, data analytics and strategy, and data science.
TechTalk 3: Retail
The speakers discussed topics that range from opportunities of Data Science and analytics in Retail, and also on providing better customer support/ experience.
Speaker 1: Ms. Olivia Limpe-Aw, President of the Destileria Limtuaco & Co., Inc. opened the afternoon session for the TechTalk 3. She shared the Data Science and AI applications of their distillery. She said that the impact of data analytics would be exponential and big!
Speaker 2: Mr. Andrew Fajardo, CEO of Bili Online Grocery. He discussed the Data Analytics in Retail Supply Chain Management.
Speaker 3: Anna Melissa Nava, Founder of 1Export Trade and Services, Inc. is talked about the initiatives of her agency that include 11 Data Sets in their Seven-Step Export Process.
The last part of the event was the anticipated lightning talks/ open mic where participants presented their activities, projects, and studies in front of the audience for 2-3 minutes. Five (5) participants took the initiatve and presented their respective efforts.
Recognizing that technology and data science will continue to evolve, the DATOS Project will also continue to provide avenue and bring together individuals, researchers, stakeholders, and established leaders in the data science community to share their knowledge and expertise, as well as their aspirations and visions to help shape the future of data science in the Philippines.
