The Remote Sensing and Data Science: DATOS Help Desk of DOST-Advanced Science and Technology Institute, together with the Philippine Space Agency, Stamina4Space, and NASA Space Apps Challenge, brought back the Data Science Kapihan series with freshly-brewed topics on how space technology and ground data are used as tools in decision and policymaking for the betterment of the human condition—especially during the current COVID-19 pandemic.
Data Brew 4 was one of the registered events for the World Space Week 2020, an annual celebration observed from 4 to 10 October in over 95 nations throughout the world. It was held on 07 October 2020 with the theme “Data Brew 4: Space and Ground Data for the Betterment of Human Condition”.
Guests and speakers were from different organizations and the academe like UP Resilience Institute, UP-Training Center for Applied Geodesy and Photogrammetry’s TrAMS+ Project, and Stamina4Space Program, as well as the finalists of NASA Space Apps COVID-19 Challenge.
The event was entirely online-- streamed on DATOS Facebook’s page and was attended by participants from government agencies and private companies, and some were students and interested individuals all over the country and overseas.
DOST Secretary Fortunato De La Peña also attended and opened the program. He reiterated that the event is closer to home as it aims to showcase the contribution of satellites in space to humans.
“In our case, this translates to the immeasurable help our satellites have given us. Since we sent our scientists and engineers abroad to acquire knowledge about satellite engineering, we have highly anticipated the integration of satellite data into our lives. Now that we have satellites up and running, and with the creation of a specialized agency that will continue the legacy we have started here in DOST, we have ensured the continuous development of satellite data applications and find more ways to use satellite data to address our needs as a country,” he added.
Data Brew is a discussion forum that brings together stakeholders in the data science community. The idea is to foster knowledge- and expertise-sharing on how data science affects our various industries and visions of its future in the Philippines.
