08 January 2020, Quezon City – Department of Science and Technology Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DOST –ASTI) Acting Director Dr. Joel Joseph S. Marciano Jr. accompanied DOST Secretary Fortunato T. De La Peña, Japanese Minister Naokazu Takemoto, and Baguio City Major Benjamin B. Magalong as they tour around the facilities of the Philippine Earth Data Resource Observation (PEDRO) Center housed in the DOST-ASTI headquarters in Diliman, Quezon City.

Minister Takemoto is a member of the House of Representatives for Osaka 15, who handles matters on Japan's State for Science & Technology and State for Space Policies. Researchers and project leads from DOST-ASTI led by Dr. Marciano and ASTI Solutions and Services Engineering Division (SSED) Chief Alvin E. Retamar gave the guests an overview of some of ASTI’s projects and accompanied them as they visited the facilities of the PEDRO Center.

Aside from the visit, Mayor Magalong along with personnel from Metals Industry Research and Development Center (DOST-MIRDC) discussed potential requirements of Baguio city for satellite imagery and, possibly, sensors.

Moreover, the group also visited the University Laboratory for Small Satellites and Space Engineering Systems (ULyS3ES) housed in UP Diliman. The ULyS3ES facility serves as a pioneering academic hub for R&D and instruction innovations in space technology in the Philippines.
