The COARE’s Data Archiving service enables users to either store their long-term data on the COARE Data Catalog or have it taped for offsite or off-the-grid storage.

Availing the Tape Backup Service

In availing the COARE’s tape backup service, users need to:

  1. Inform the COARE Team of their request to avail of the tape backup service
Users can do this by sending an e-mail to the COARE Team (gridops@asti.dost.gov.ph) detailing the size of data to be stored and the specific location within their respective virtual machines (VM).
  2. Provide compatible tapes to the COARE Team
Users need to submit compatible tapes to the COARE Team because tape compatibility will ensure consistency and interoperability of tape resources.

Tape Compatibility Guidelines

The COARE’s current setup uses DELL LTO-6 drives.

For your reference in determining tape compatibility, please read the description from DELL below:

Tape Backup Technology
LTO specifications are an open format designed for interoperability
Investment protection is assured through backwards compatibility

LTO-8 reads 1 generation back; LTO-5, LTO-6 and LTO-7 reads 2 generations back
Each LTO generation writes 1 generation back

Linear Tape File System (LTFS) support provides easy data access and management allowing easy file share; LTFS-LE software is available for purchase
